Juneteenth-Let's Make it KNOWN!

I took a poll on my Instagram asking the community if they had ever been taught about this holiday. So far 100% said "No." Why isn't this apart of our school curriculum? June 19, 1865 was the day that Texas, being the last state post Civil War- officially recognized the abolishment of slavery.

This holiday has long gone under the mainstream radar. Not many average American citizens have attended a Juneteenth parade or jamboree, nor have taken the day off work to celebrate. We can see the frustration from a black father, in the character of "Dre"in an episode of ABC's "Blackish," by creator Kenya Barris. The tv episode "Juneteenth" is a must see, particularly in today's climate. Let's encourage the American Dream by reviving an overlooked holiday. Juneteenth is American History!

The book titles shown in the picture below were pinned to our #HimaniReaders Pinterest board. And unfortunately such titles are rare, we need more resources! IF you can help us out with more book suggestions, please leave a comment. And if you are an author- I implore you to WRITE! We need more Juneteenth books, so that this topic can be accessible to our children and educators.
