Presenting Himani Readers STEM month- With Guest blogger Emma Gwynne!

Launching our STEM month of April with this PERFECT title.

Representation matters in STEM so it’s extremely positive to see more and more diversity. This book will inspire a new generation of scientists to concoct experiments with all the necessary ingredients found in their kitchens.  Scrolling through Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest there’s always a magna copia of “fun science experiment” type videos. Rainbow foam pours out of a plastic bottle, droplets of food colouring in milk spread around a plate. So far, so good, I’m deeply in favour of promoting STEM education for children. However, my biggest bug bear is that they hardly ever include any scientific explanations.

It all started with a toy helicopter...

This is what I love about Alom Shaha’s book ‘Mr Shaha’s Recipes for Wonder’. Each fun experiment is followed by a detailed explanation about the science behind the bang. Alom Shaha was born in Bangladesh and then grew up in multicultural London where he later became a science teacher. This is probably why so many of the experiments are connected to topics that are covered in school such as: Newton’s Laws of Physics, molecules, forces, positive and negative electrical charges, acids, alkali and many more.

Great way to recycle those smoothie straws!

Many parents are keen for their kids to learn about the topics mentioned above but a factor that can put them off is sometimes the sheer cost and hassle of sourcing all the different parts. In this book the ingredients are easy to find and not expensive to buy. One just involves glasses and water, another requires some daffodils ready for dissection, even plastic straws are turned into instruments to teach us about vibration and sound.

There are many children’s books featuring science experiments but for me what sets this book apart from other kids lit are the beautiful illustrations by Emily Robertson. Her bright and colourful watercolour pictures give the book a stylish feel while still retaining the accuracy needed to follow the instructions.

From one laboratory to another-Thanks Emma for partnering with Himani Readers this month and sharing your delightful insights! Please follow both her Instagram accounts for more great book recommendations and reviews. Click here @kidsbookreviewsbyem and also @childrensbooksinspanish.

Now GO try something NEW, sky's the limit!

What parent wouldn't love their child actually baking something that TASTED good, while learning about science?!

This could get interesting....!
