This year we were introduced to the trending topic on Twitter about #OWNvoices. Since this is a broad category and can mean different things to various groups, I will clarify how we approach it. For us at Himani Readers we feel that an author who writes from their #OWNvoice about their own particular experience, culture, and issues that they are qualified to speak on-resonates with readers of the same category. We feel that representation matters in the field of kids literature NOW more than ever!
We came across "The Adventures of Li-Li" on Facebook and started chatting with Author Gin Noon-Spaulding. We love her enthusiasm and passion to help support other parents and families that deal with sensory issues on a daily basis. Here is some feedback about her first book as a self-published author!
What Others Are Saying
A five star review from an Amazon reader says it all: "This beautifully illustrated book can help parents as well as kids understand the sensory overload that can freeze some kids with fear in crowds, even among people they love. I was one of those kids who waited in the sanctuary until the crowds cleared or dashed through the halls, hunting for my daddy (who directed the choir) so that I could bury my head in his shoulder while he carried me out through the lingering crowds after church. I can feel LiLi's pain and joy. This book can help parents and siblings who are struggling with similarly "shy" kids. It can help playmates understand each other. Best of all, it can tell all of the kids like LiLi know they aren't alone. Great first book. I can't wait for more in the series."-Kim
About Gin
"I’ve always enjoyed telling a good story. I would begin telling one story, which would make me think of another story, and then I'd tell it, too! My daughter (Maleah) is my inspiration for "The Adventures of Li-Li", my very first children's book series. Each book will focus on at least two sensory issues. I plan to address all 7 senses (Yes....there are seven senses. Most people know about five of them, but there are also two hidden senses many aren't aware of.....vestibular and proprioception). I chose to write about sensory issues because so many people aren't aware of them or the effect they can have on children. My first book from the series, A Miracle at Bates Memorial is about the day I finally understood my child's sensory issues.
My hope is that I can encourage parents....helping them to understand that they are not alone AND to give little ones the voice they may not have to describe what is really going on in their minds, hearts, and bodies."
