¡Gracias a todas las abuelas por todo tu amor!
In the U.S. it is "Hispanic Heritage Month" until October 15th. Despite not having Latina roots, I personally have always been surrounded by dear Abuela type women in my life that have nurtured me as their own. Its these neighborhood grandmothers that bring a sense of love, care and soul nourishment with their amazing home cooking, sweet hugs and big laughter. I'm so grateful to have been "adopted" into many of these families over the years and have secretly wished I would have spent more time in the kitchen learning how to make those amazing recipes!
I hope you have had a chance encounter with an amazing Abuela and if not-go out and find a new friend, they will truly enrich your life. The matriarchs of hispanic families hold a special presence of honor and Abuelas are regarded as practically the life blood of the family unit. Let's cherish our Abuelitas this month for their strength and determination in passing down traditions and culture, for yelling at us in Spanish while playfully beating us with wooden spoons and smothering us with besos and shoving one more empanada in our mouths before we walk out the door.
